The Hole
Readers with a keen eye will notice that the Pentium4's metal slug has a small hole in the bottom right corner, which actually serves a purpose. We asked heatsink manufacturers what this hole does, and they told us this hole actually acts as a form of suction between the heatsink and the processor core. When you apply thermal paste to the core (which Intel now bundles with their CPU's), then put a heatsink on it, some of the paste will go into that hole when the processor heats up and the liquids expand. When the processor cools down, the heatsink material inside and outside of the hole form a bond, and helps hold the heatsink down to the CPU for more efficient heat transfer. It may sound farfetched, but it actually makes a lot of sense.
