The Athlon XP (Thoroughbred "B" Core)
The Thoroughbred "B" is simply a revised version of the "A" core, with one major kick - speed! These chips feature the usual optimizations on an instruction level, and major modifications in the actual physical manufacturing process. Extra layers in the core itself allow for extremely high speeds that were nowhere near possible with the older "A" core. Thoroughbred B chips are the cream of the crop right now for overclockers, and overclocks of 30-50% are common, with overclocks up to 100% being reported. That's a lot of speed! This type of cpu looks identical to the Thoroughbred "A" and can be hard to distinguish. The easiest way to spot a "B" core is to read the 5 letter stepping. This is found at the bottom left corner of the label, and in our example below, reads "AUIGB". I am certain that this is a "B" core because of the letter "B" at the end of the stepping. These chips are currently made in speeds from 1467-2250mhz (1700+ to 2800+) with 133 and 166 (effectively 266 and 333) mhz bus speeds.
