.. "lost icons desktop experts exchange" .. ..
experts exchange, ( ) .. ... .. ... ( .. ...)
I have an Acer desktop with XP Home SP1 that has lost ALL the desktop icons and toolbar, even in safe mode. In fact the Windows key doesn't even do anything.
Short of re-installing XP, is there anything I can try?

Hi raylab,
To get you going:
When windows loads (without showing anything), press ctrl+shift+esc together. this will load the task manager.
in the task manager, go to "File > Run" and enter "explorer.exe", this should load your desktop.
If this works, we'll investigate further.

Greetings, raylab !
Run this vbs script to restore your Desktop icons and taskbar

Best wishes!

The explorer.exe did nothing and how do I run a .vbs script in the present condition? I can get the task manager and a run dialog from there, btu that is all... If I put the above script on a floppy and browse to it in the Run dialog, I get an error stating "Can't find script engine VBSCRIPT..."

You can try to do a system restore, to restore it back to a date when it was once working. In the task manager click new task then type msconfig to launch the system restore.

Hi raylab,
just as an FYI (once you get your desktop/task bar fixed) : is there a reason why you aren't on SP2 ?
and, is you antivirus up-to-date?

raylab, if you cannot run the vbs script, and if system restore does not work, then you have to reinstall the operating system.

can you boot to a command prompt? if so, try this from the prompt
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;304449
Starting System Restore Tool from Command Prompt
Start your computer to Safe Mode with Command Prompt.
NOTE: You must log on as the administrator or a user that has administrator rights.
At the command prompt, type %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe , and then press ENTER.
Follow the instructions on the screen to begin restoring your computer to a previous, functional state.

LeeTutor:
Try typing in this command in Task Manager:
cscript a:\xp_taskbar_desktop_fixall.vbs
(This assumes that is the name and location of the VB script file.) The file cscript.exe should be in your Windows\System32 folder. You might, though I doubt it, have to include that path in the above command. Here is some info on cscript.exe:

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe from the command prompt gave me a blank restore dialog window...
Can't wait to hear the gnashing and moaning when I tell the owners I have to re-load XP!!!
Any other tricks before I try a re-store from the OEM setup CD's?
And, I really appreciate all the guidance thus far!!

If LeeTutor's workaround doesnt work:
if you are having so many issues that cant even get a script to run, i would be trying a repair install straight off your disk, you will loose a few settings (hmmmm.... ironic) and no data its quick painless and reliable

LeeTutor: yes I did and it did not work else I would not have continued, I have tried each and every tip passed on by all of you very kind and generous folk!
Status:
I only had the OEM restore disks, not straight XP install disks for this machine, so in order to not loose all the 3'rd party stuff and applications, I wound up doing a complete re-build.
Maybe if they loose some data they will not ignore the risk of letting their anti-virus expire, and the risks of un-protected WWW bowsing, and the risk of letting every Tom, Dick and Sherry use their PC w/o supervision!!! Very hard nosed of me,but what do you want for free? Oh, did I forget to mention that this is a favor my boss extended to one of his organizations? Oh, and they had two or three other hackers try to 'fix' the problems but they mysteriously kept getting worser and worser... By the time I got it, I didn't even know the original cause or sympthoms, just got a basket case! Oh, well. I hate to do re-installs cuz it seems like a radical move, but sometimes you just gotta do it!
Thanks again to all of you, now I'll see if I can divvy up the points...

As an added note, I do not know why they only had SP1, I suspect that they just did not know better, but that was not the issue, restoration or repair was... Thanks again to all.

pleasure,
nothing wrong with a rebuild anyway, i do mine about every 6-8 months just to keep the machine fresh and happy
all the best
