    Some ATI(2xxx series and up) and NVIDIA(8xxx series and up) video cards offer audio output over their DVI connectors. The audio signal is embedded into the same TMDS stream as the video signal. The output of such a card may be fed to a device accepting audio and video over HDMI using a DVI to HDMI adapter. Some board partners now integrate hdmi into the backplate alongside dvi, negating the need for such adapters.
