The graphs compare a 4 way set associative cache with a direct-mapped cache. To refresh your memory: a direct-mapped cache has one cacheline for a certain chunk RAM. This is a primitive cache as it is possible that two heavily used memory locations will push each other out of the cache.
In a direct mapped cache, every memory address is always stored (mapped) to the same area of a particular cache and when data is copied into a cache line, the old data has to be evicted. With a 4-way associative cache, each address in memory could be stored in one of 4 different cache areas, and when the data is loaded the cache controller will choose one based on some algorithm (last used, oldest, random, and so on). This attempts to improve the effective hit rate by reducing the chance that the line chosen to be evicted will be needed again shortly. Associative caches are larger and have higher latency, but the reward is a better hit rate.
Below you can find a brief look at the comparison of the two different cache systems.
Missrate /DMc 16KB/DMc 32KB/DMc 64KB/4-Way 16KB/4-Way 32KB
Photoshop / 3.7% / 2.7% / 2% / 1% / 0.5%
Netscape / 3% / 1.9% / 1.4% / 1.2% / 1%
It is interesting to see that a 4 way associative cache which is only 16 KB in size can outperform a 64 KB direct-mapped cache.
