World Cup of Motorsport :

The chairman of the prestigious A1 Grand Prix South Africa series, Tokyo Sexwale, announced important developments in the rollout of what has been dubbed the "World Cup of Motorsport".

A date has now been set for the inaugural race of the A1 series. It will be held at the famous Brands Hatch racetrack in the United Kingdom on September 25, 2005.

A total of 13 nations are now on board, with more to be announced in Pakistan this weekend. As was the case in South Africa when President Mbeki launched the national car, the event will be hosted by Pakistan's head of state, President Musharaff, in Lahore.

A range of high-profile international businesspersons, including leading sporting personalities, have joined the global A1 initiative

These include the name of the Brazilian seat-holder, who is a top Brazilian footballer and will join other footballing giants such as Portugal's Luis Figo, who leads the Portuguese consortium.

The first consignment of 50 A1 cars is currently in production at Lola Motors, with manufacturing at an advanced stage. This is by far the single largest order of motor cars in the history of motor racing.
