A: CL2 parts process data a little quicker than CL3 parts in that you have to wait one less clock cycle for the initial data. However, after the first piece of data is processed, the rest of the data is processed at equal speeds. Latency only affects the initial burst of data.

    # What is CL2 vs. CL3?
CL stands for CAS latency. CAS latency is the number of clock cycles needed for data to be retrieved from the memory component during an initial read from the CPU. The lower the number of clock cycles needed the faster the operation. Since the CPU reads from the SDRAM in a burst mode (meaning it retrieves data several chunks at a time instead of just one at a time), the remaining reads are done more quickly. There are two versions of the PC100 module readily available, one with a CAS latency of 2 and the other with a CAS latency of 3. The components for the slower PC66 can run at a CAS latency of either 2 or 3 because of high yields at the SDRAM manufacturers. The difficulty with the PC100 components is the lower yields on the SDRAM during manufacturing process. A fair number of parts will not run at the faster speed of CAS latency 2 but work fine at CAS latency 3. This, however, only applies to the initial reading of the memory by the CPU. The second read and following reads are the same for both parts. So, if you are an average user, you won't notice the difference between the two parts since the performance delta is so small.
