Nov 10 '04 (Updated Nov 10 '04)
Author's Product Rating
Pros
Wireless, cheap, reliable, anti-rsi optical mouse with on/off switch, recharging receiver, batteries included
Cons
Electronic smell on mouse, Must remove and charge mouse batteries (instead of a recharging stand)
The Bottom Line
the keyboard is a must, consider an alternative mouse
Full Review
A4 Tech may not be a very widely known name in the US, but here in Asia it has been a good friend to computer users for many years. A4 Tech distributes computer peripherals like keyboards, mice, speakers and scanners. Ive used A4 Tech optical and roller ball mice for over 4 years and they have consistently treated me well (also unlike my friends, they still like me despite the fact that I was cheap in buying them).
In Asia, A4 Tech products cost around 50% less than comparable products from Microsoft and Logitech. I can only hypothesize that as A4 Tech is the relative unknown, they feel they have something to prove, hence their products consistently have a well-thought out feel to them and are extremely user friendly. They also release innovative new products very regularly. Three cheers for competition!
Here, I am reviewing my first ever wireless keyboard and mouse combo bought around a month ago. This set cost me US$48. (this set was first released in 2004)
My Actual Opinion of the Set
I highly recommend this set if you are looking for a new peripheral combo. I have had no problems with the installation and use of this product and I use it every day. It has been a joy to use.
In the month of use, I have re-charged the batteries for the mouse about once a week and the keyboard batteries have not yet needed changing.
I dont use this equipment near a radio or tv so dont know what the interference (if any) is like with those types of equipment around. Doesnt seem to be affected by my mobile phone
My only complaint is the slightly electronic smell you get off the battery charger/receiver and mouse. You can smell it on your hand when you use the mouse for a short period of time, which isnt very pleasant and may mean Im slowly frying whats left of my brain yay! If youve no idea what Im talking about think of the smell of a piece of lightly fried electronic equipment or electronic equipment that has been stored up in a room for a long period of time. Im sure actual techno people will tell me the name and reason for this phenomenon, but thats all I know how to describe it as! (Less one star for this)
Considering the value of the set, this would be an ideal gift for kids in colleges with restricted space so much easier to put things away when theres no wires to battle with.
Following is the nitty gritty detailed description *slightly* anal people like myself would like to know:
Keyboard:
The keyboard is predominately matt Silver plastic with grey highlights and RSI pad (easily self-installed on purchase with the click method) and black keys with white letters.
There are many silver hot keys on the keyboard as follows:
* Left hand top New / Word / Excel / WWW / Email (will auto open these programs when pressed)
* Middle top DVD stop / Pause, Volume up / down, rewind / forward.
other my computer / calculator / calender / Office / log off / search / mute
* Right hand top Internet tools Back / Forward / Stop / Refresh / Favorites
* Left hand side Power (doesnt work) / sleep / toggle / close / back / forward, an up/down scroll wheel (I love this wheel - it means you dont have to switch between the keyboard and mouse as much, always a plus when you do a lot of word processing or internet surfing or reading)
* Left hand bottom Office Editing tools Undo / copy / cut / paste
Qwerty full keyboard with number pad, arranged in anti RSI A shape
Buttons are small, shiny silver plastic and aesthetically not ugly (i.e. not beautiful either)
On the underside there is a removable cover for 2 AA batteries, a ch1 or ch2 switch, 2 small keyboard tilters on top of underside (only raises the keyboard around 1cm).
Keys are wonderfully responsive and I do find slightly less strain on my wrists while using this A shaped keyboard system which is a relief because I cannot STAND those Microsoft ergonomic keyboards with the big hump in the middle. Some may take getting used to it I find if I look down at the keys I get flustered, but if I touch type as I normally do, my fingers instinctively know where to go. This format is supposed to be anti-Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) A4 tech makes a big deal out of their Anti RSI products!
The keyboard is light enough to put on your lap and type (doesnt get hot), but still sturdy enough that if I dropped it, think it would survive. Dont bet on it still working if you throw it at your two-timing boyfriend though, unless you throw like a girl, or he is extremely fat.
Mouse
The mouse is an 8K wireless optical 800cpi. Basically what that means is no wires and instead of the ball thing you have the red flashing light thing.
Its (matching to the keyboard) Silver plastic with grey rubber finger molds at side. The silver plastic on top is actually left and right click button (not separate buttons but part of the same seamless section, which is slicker than the traditional setup) divided by 2 hot keys (self assign), scroll wheel and office switch button which brings up a function menu onscreen.
At left hand (thumb side if you are right handed) there are a further two hot keys (self assign)
On the underside is a removable cover for 2 AA batteries and an on-off switch - great function which I havent seen on the other 2 wireless mice I have - good for power saving.
The indentations on the sides of the mouse make for more comfortable housing of your hand (think of a ball of clay which you put your hand over and squeezed using your pinky and thumb). Fits nicely in my palm and I have a fairly large hand (for a girl)!
Receiver
The receiver is in black plastic and is a single USB cord with a built in charger for 2 AA batteries. (with removable clear plastic cover). All the battery outlets have that great little red ribbon thing you use to pull out the batteries for changing.
Additional items included
Installation cd, its a snap to set up Took me less than 10 minutes and the hot keys work fine. If youre not bothered about using hot keys you can choose not to install using the cd the keyboard and mouse will work just fine for traditional functions without installation (i.e. typing and mouse clicking and scrolling)
The CD includes a kids typing game very basic, quite boring, probably only good for those under 4.
4 rechargeable batteries great! You can charge 2 while using the other 2, meaning you never have a dead mouse. On the other hand, this is not as good as another wireless mouse I have that has a recharging stand (brand: Blaze, not listed in epinions) for the mouse so you dont have to keep pulling out and putting in batteries. A4 tech has just come out with a wireless, battery less mouse which would solve this problem if you dont like this fiddly sort of thing
2 regular batteries supposed to be for the keyboard although you can also use the rechargeable batteries with the keyboard.
You can recharge other rechargeable batteries with the receiver/charger, but not normal alkaline ones. If you choose to be smart and use alkaline batteries in your charger, youll break the whole thing and have to buy a new receiver.
Programming the keyboard/mouse on your computer
Key board and mouse properties panel will appear in your start menu under A4 tech hardware. Change or program your hot-keys, default actions here.
For example you can change repeat key speed for your keyboard, cursor blinking speed and assign hot key functions on your keyboard, or you can change mouse for left handed or right handed settings.
One great function is that you can choose the scroll speed for your mouse (3 lines scrolled at one flick or a whole page a flick)
Reaction time
I notice the reaction time is excellent for my word processing, net surfing and basic game playing (i.e. instantaneous). This line in particular was typed from 2 metres away and the words came up instantly on the screen! The Mouse is not quite so powerful, but fine around my desktop area, and very sensitive to movement.
I had some sales people tell me A4 tech wireless products were a bad idea after I bought this set and before I used it they said the optical mouse often jumped all over the place and the keyboard had a really slow reaction time and the battery would run out very fast. Im sorry that I listened to them and purchased a wired Logitech product for my 2nd computer, because those issues never came up. And I love how clean my desk looks with all those wires gone!.
Other Specs:
Made in China
Complies with Part 15 of FCC rules (Class B Digital Device)
Uses Radio frequency energy.
Usable on Windows 2000/ME/XP/2003
There are two channels available (if you are using wireless devices on more than 1 system in close proximity you need to set them to different channels). This seems to be pretty standard for all wireless devices. Additionally, they have 255 user ID codes meaning you could use 255 of these keyboards in close vicinity and they wouldnt interfere with each other. I guess this is good for office use I didnt test this function as I have no use for 255 of these things.

(Thanks to nc10 for adding this product to the database so quickly!)

Actually ,it is a normal phenomenon, just for the computer's "hibernation" confuse the channels of the keyboard&mouse on the receiver, now when you reboot your computer, the channel of the keyboard and the one of the mouse has been exchaged for each other,so now the only way to resolve the problem is to change the mouse and the keyboard channel.so please make the mouse channel 1 and the keyboard channel 2., ...You might thought there is something wrong with the keyboard and mouse set. However, the ultimate solution is that you didn't lock your ID. Because of these pointing devices are RF wireless, you need to lock your RF ID to prevent your neighbor interfere your radio frequence mouse. To lock the RF ID for wireless mouse, simple right click on the mouse icon on the bottom right corner. Select Read ID. For keyboard, please type any key on the keyboard and immediately press the button located on the receiver to lock the RF ID for keyboard.Last edited by geniusloci; 30th October 2005 at 03:35.
