Filters and players for:
H.264 encoded with .mkv or .mp4 container
- CoreAVC Video Decoder 0.0.0.4 ,video decoding (no need to uninstall ffdshow). http://www.yourfilelink.com/get.php?fid=23020, OR http://www.freewebs.com/illacorp/CoreAVCDecoder.ax.
- DirectVobSub (VSFilter) ,subtitles, http://www.free-codecs.com/download/DirectVobSub.htm
- AC3Filter 1.01a RC5, AC3 audio decoding, http://www.free-codecs.com/AC3_Filter_download.htm ,or you can decode AC3 with ffdshow
- AAC audio playback, lots of choises like FFDShow ( http://www.x264.nl/ ) , Nero, CoreAAC (http://www.free-codecs.com/download/...how_filter.htm )
- Haali splitter for .mkv and mp4 here: http://haali.cs.msu.ru/mkv/.
- As a light player I recommend Media Player Classic (MPC http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/ ). The most promising new player for "slow" CPU is Core Player you can find latest betas here ( http://picard.exceed.hu/tcpmp/test/ ).
Filters/players needed for transport streams (.ts):
* VLC - http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
can handle and do deinterlacing for .ts if you have the CPU for it. Same for programs like PowerDVD and WinDVD
* For lighter playback you can try my favorite, Elecard MPEG Player and Elecard filter config http://www.elecard.com/ftp/pub/direc...lterConfig.zip. From filter config you can adjust deinterlacing when using with players like MPC,Zoomplayer or BSplayer. For external subtitles try MPC with VSFilter and let us know it works.
* Media Player Classic has built in mpeg-2 decoding just duble click on mpeg-2 in filters
Note DVD players like PowerDVD,WinDVD and Elcard have the optio to use hardware accelaration for Mpeg-2 decoding.
Hardware decoding with Graphics GPU for H.264.
Both Nvidia and ATI have an solution for their current line of GFX cards. You can followup ATI discussion in this sticky http://hdbits.org/forums.php?action=...ic&topicid=194.
Nvidia opted for an commercial solution with Pure Video http://www.nvidia.com/page/purevideo.html. You can find here torrent file and tips for usage.
For .mov encoded H.264 install Quicktime with above H.264 filters. Now you can use
CoreAVC even with QuckTime player and .mov files open with MPC. Note latest MPC release has improved support for Quicktime files.
WMV3 and VC-1 use WMP and MPC.
Xvid or MPEG-4 ASP HDTV resolution encoded material is quite light to decode compared to H.264 so just install ffdshow and disable postprosessing or install Xvid codec http://www.koepi.org/xvid.shtml.
Note
After trying out ffdshow May 22 2006 from x264.nl I have to say it does quite a good job decoding H.264 with almost as low CPU usage as CoreAVC. Due to other usable options in ffdshow I'm prefering it over CoreAVC atm for my own use.
Misc information

HDTV http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_definition_television
How do I join .TS files together?
The easiest way I find is to use the command prompt program 'copy'.
If you've got some files in 'Y:\Download\alt.binaries.hdtv'
open up the command prompt (start menu->run: type cmd) and type:
cd Y:\Download\alt.binaries.hdtv
y:
copy /b *.ts output.ts
This will make a file in Y:\Download\alt.binaries.hdtv called output.ts - which will be your film joined together.
Another method is to use HDTVtoMPEG2 which you can get here - http://www.midwinter.com/~bcooley/HDTVtoMPEG2_v107.zip
Is 1280x(528/544/etc) 720p?
Yes, anything with a horizontal resolution of 1280 is considered 720p. When aired on tv they are 1280x720 but have black bars at the top and bottom - the actual video size is smaller. When reencoding to x264/xvid people remove the black bars to make the video a little smaller.

New Features
This section provides information on new features that are introduced in this release of Catalyst?. New features include:
H.264 Hardware Acceleration
Catalyst? 5.13 software suite introduces H.264 hardware acceleration for the ATI Radeon? X1800, X1600, and X1300 product line. H.264 is advanced video coding that provides significant reduction in bit-rate compared to standards such as MPEG-2 and MPEG-4. The ATI Radeon? X1800, X1600, and X1300 products provide hardware acceleration for the playback of high-definition content that is encoded using H.264. Using the Catalyst? software suite 5.13, along with the Cyberlink H.264 decoder available from http://www.ati.com/technology/h264.html provides H.264 hardware acceleration.
ATI CrossFire? Support for the ATI Radeon? X1800
ATI CrossFire? allows for multiple Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) to be placed within a single PC, to provide superior gaming performance. The Catalyst? 5.13 software suite is the first Catalyst? to provide ATI CrossFire? support. CrossFire? support is available when an ATI Radeon? X1800 CrossFire? Edition product is installed with another Radeon? X1800 product. Further information on ATI CrossFire? can be found at: http://www.ati.com/technology/crossfire/faq.html
HQV Video Benchmark Support
The Catalyst? software suite 5.13 introduces full support for the HQV DVD Benchmark. These driver tweaks provide a better DVD image quality, and higher benchmark scores.

DGMPGDec aka DGIndex aka dgdecode.dll ^^
DGIndex, part of the DGMPGDec package, is primarily designed to create an index of an MPEG video stream, containing the location of each frame in the input stream, and some additional information about each frame. This index, or project file, is used by the companion AviSynth filter DGDecode to provide frame-accurate serving of the video via an Avisynth script. DGIndex is able to decode and index most MPEG1/2 streams including elementary streams, program streams, VOBs, VCDs, SVCDs, PVA files, and transport streams. Additional features include: video demuxing (m1v/m2v), audio demuxing (ac3, dts, aac, mpa, and lpcm), optimized iDCTs, luminance filtering, cropping, and more.

Before encoding you can do a compression test but I prefer to encode samples first to check my settings and filters. Btw because every source is different there are no general BEST settings to be used if you aim for optimal result.
My favorite place to check anything new related to encoding is www.doom9.org
Any question you might have has already been covered over there either in guides or forums.
